What are the "categories," and how are they assigned to each article?

Google Discover operates by identifying "interests" of users and presenting articles that align with these interests. Such interests might relate to their geographical location or specific topics. The "categories" you see in our data directly represent these topics.

We utilize Google's classification ontology, which comprises 1,091 distinct categories, structured into a main root category and subsequent sub-levels.

Each day, our user panel records 20,000 new stories. Every story undergoes analysis and categorization. The primary category assigned to a story is displayed beneath its title.

You can apply category filters to display only articles from specific categories.

Additionally, categories serve as an insightful tool for understanding how different publishers are attracting audiences. Within a publisher's report, you can identify which categories generate the most audience engagement for them.
